Artist Statement
ARTIST STATEMENT
I started painting with oils about nine years ago with my instructor and mentor, Wes Berrier. Wes teaches the chiaroscuro method of painting. Chiaroscuro is a method for applying value to a two-dimensional piece of artwork to create the illusion of a three-dimensional solid form. This way of painting is hundreds of years old and was devised during the Italian Renaissance.
This method had taught me to study my surroundings, the colors of the sky, lakes and mountains, the way the sun casts shadows across the landscape. To me the light and shadow may be more interesting than the subject.
I enjoy traveling and always have a camera ready to capture moments in time that I can preserve on canvas. My paintings are snapshots of all the moments in life that I am able to appreciate and enjoy.
Painting takes me to another place where all of my stress and worry give way with each stroke of my brush.
